Product Description

VINYL SILANE FOR CROSSLINKING POLYETHYLENE, Silcat 17
Description
SLC-17 is a modified vinyltrimethoxysilane containing a crosslinking tin catalyst. In order to be used as one-step (Monosil) crosslinking system, addition of a suitable peroxide is required.

Equivalent rProducts from Other Manufacturers
Silcat  17  from Momentive

Advantages of SLC-17
Low capital investment
Low operating costs
Higher productivity
Processing versatility
Thick, thin or variable thickness possible
Complex shapes possible
Wider processing latitude(control of premature crosslinking)
Useful with filled composites

Key features and Typical Benefits
  1. The choice and concentration of the peroxide to be added can be easily adapted to the specific polyethylene grade and extrusion equipment used.
  2.  After the addition of a peroxide initiator the SLC-17 can be used to crosslink stabilized, polyethylene grades in commercially available one-step extrusion equipment.

Reaction Sequence
Moisture content of the PE resin must be less than 200 ppm. In hot and humid countries pre-drying of the resin at 70ºC by means of an air desiccator is highly recommended.
Grafting: Optimum addition levels for a given application must be determined experimentally. Data collected on Nextrom extruders indicate that the dose levels of SLC-17 should be between 1.3 and 2.0 wt %.
Temperature profile setting of the extruder:
  • Barrel                     150/150/150/190/200/200/210ºC
  • Head and die              210ºC
  • Screw                     80-100ºC
Crosslinking: Rate of cure is dependent upon time, temperature and thickness of the layer and available moisture. Sufficient crosslinking can be achieved by any of the following methods:
  • Immersion in water at 80-90ºC ,or
  • Exposure to low pressure steam at 105ºC,or
  • Exposure to steam at atmospheric pressure

Patent Status
Nothing contained herein shall be construed to imply the nonexistence of any relevant patents or to constitute a permission, inducement or recommendation to practice any invention covered by any patent, without authority from the owner of the patent.
